Precision Bore Finishing Solutions for Demanding Industries

BOSON Abrasives offers a full range of single pass honing tools equipped with either electroplated or sintered diamond abrasive sleeves, designed for high-precision bore sizing in industries where dimensional accuracy, surface quality, and process stability are critical.

Single pass honing is a high productivity bore finishing process, that imparts high precision form, tight tolerance control and high surface finish consistenly and precisely. The process involves passing a series of tools with pre-set sizes, progressively through the bore, in a single in-and-out stroke. Either honing tools or part, or both can be floating.

The number of tools that are used, depend on part material hardness, total stock removal amount, geometrical tolerances and surface finish requirements. Single pass honing tools are suitable for high production rates, ensuring very close bore size & geometric repeatability over a large batch size of order of tens of thousands of parts, reaching as high as 600,000 parts in one setting.


Electroplated Diamond Honing Tools
The electroplated abrasive sleeve is manufactured by depositing a layer of nickel or nickel alloy onto the surface of the substrate through an electroplating process, while embedding diamond or cubic boron nitride (CBN) abrasive particles uniformly into the plating layer. This process ensures that the abrasive particles are evenly distributed on the surface of the sleeve, thereby enhancing high cutting efficiency and precise dimensional control. The electroplated abrasive sleeve exhibits very high cutting capability during the initial stages of honing, making it particularly suitable for the high-precision machining of hard materials.

Sintered Diamond Honing Tools

The metal sintered abrasive sleeve is manufactured by uniformly mixing superabrasives (such as diamond or cubic boron nitride), metal powder, and binders in specific proportions, then pressing them into shape and sintered at high temperatures. After sintering, the product undergoes multiple stages of precision machining. The abrasive particles are uniformly distributed throughout the sintered body, forming a structure with multiple layers of abrasives. As the surface abrasives wear, new abrasive particles are gradually exposed, ensuring the tool maintains stable cutting performance and a high surface finish during use.

 Diameter Range: Ø4 mm - Ø70 mm

Single Pass Honing relative to Conventional Honing
Conventional honing is done by a tool that expands and contracts as the tool reciprocates in the bore during the honing cycle. Simultaneous radial and axial movements of the tool make it difficult to precisely and consistently control the bore size and geometry. Although conventional honing does offer excellent bore finishing, batch sizes and bore controllability are limited by the nature of the process.

Single pass honing tools with expandable abrasive sleeve coated with diamond or CBN grit. The tools hone the bore in one pass only, removing a certain specific amount of material per tool. With a set of tools working on the bore progressively, bore size & geometry are controlled precisely and consistently over a large batch size. Since the tool stroke is only once in single stroke honing ,cycle time is greatly reduced.

The single pass honing tools comprise

b, A tapered mandrel on which the abrasive sleeve is mounted and affixed.
The honing sleeve is set to size during the set-up, once set, further adjustment or movement is not necessary during the cutting cycle.
